Now I’ve heard it all…
Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.
“The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt.
Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry’s survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people.”
What’s your take on this guys? I’d say if the car companies didn’t get it, the porn industry shouldn’t either.

Rule 34 in action?
Seriously. Who buys Pr0n when it’s free on the ‘net?
hey hey, if we had no porn we’d have had no Internet, Internet Related Jobs – so all bloggers and general internet users, lend me your …
Well if they’re as legitimate as any other industry, shouldn’t they get the same chance as everyone else?
@Joseph – Pr0n is responsible for many internet innovations, but to say without it there’d be no internet? Interesting.
@Ethne – I’m not sure about whether the question is the legitimacy of the industry, but whether the industry is a basic fundamental of society. I don’t think that the adult entertainment industry is a necessity that drives an economy the way, for example, the banking sector is, but hey I’m open minded enough to have my views changed.
I just spotted this on CNN and posted it up real quick but didn’t go look for further details. Something else I saw today implied it might be joke. But I’m not sure.
@ CybaDelic: Without researching the facts, I’d hazard a guess that they’re as much of a “necessity” as any other entertainment industry, such as games, for example. Society may not “need” it as much as the banking sector, but they do provide jobs, etc, thus contributing to the economy.
Larry Flynt is notorious for fucking with the government. I would not be surprised if he’s just doing this to make a statement on how ridiculous these buy outs really are. (FYI, they’re not working – we’re still fucked)
Hey, if the porn industry is flagging, it probably means that people just aren’t buying porn in the same way that they used to (ie, DVD and magazine). A lot of things have gone online now…why pay whatever amount of money for a DVD when you can log into whatever free porn site you want? The porn industry, methinks, if it wants to stay alive, needs to do what the music industry needs to do to survive in the new age: evolve.
Faran –
Flynt is a publicity hustler.
