I like it because, well it has hot vampires in it. 😛
But no, seriously, I really dig vampires. And after Angel left, we were left a bit short on those in the TV world. And NO, Moonlight does NOT count, at all!!!
True Blood has a very gritty, dark and realistic feel, very different from what you’re used to in vampire shows. It brings a fresh, updated take on the whole vampire genre. The vampires “come out of the coffin” and are just accepted as normal in the world. They have an organisation fighting for equal rights for vampires, people have to learn how to deal with them. But are they good or evil and where do their allegiances lie? Can vampires really mainstream? Plus, it’s set in the South and there’s all these parallels with how African American’s were treated like second class citizens there. Also, many of the characters are like white-trash hicks, uber-religious, very superstitious and prejudiced etc.
And I also think the characters are quite nuanced. For example, the lead character, Sookie Stackhouse is sweet and naieve and innocent, but she’s not a pushover. She doesn’t just sit around and let people tell her what to do or thing, and wait for people to help her and save her. She’s very proactive, which I like for a change. You know, unlike some other women in vampire stories (Maya in Bram Stokers Dracula and frakkin whatsisname Mary-Sue chick in Twilight *gag gag*)
Joe, I tried to watch Fringe but I kept falling asleep. I tried the first episode twice and then tried the second and third as well. But Sameer and my friend Zulaigha both quite liked to. So it gets a horizontal, side-to-side wobbly hand thing from me. 😛
Dudes and dudettes: I’ve watched the whole series and reckon it’s the coolest thing to hit the small screen since Twin Peaks. Not only a great supernatural thriller or a weird-out fest of epic proportions, but also a very funny satirical commentary on race relations, ethics and human superstitions. Well worth it if you can handle the weirdness.
“I dunno who you think you are, but before the night is through… I wanna do bad things with you.”
Tim, I think the intro is sooo cool! I like how it mixes all the superstitious/religious images with the dead/decomposing stuff and the predators — snakes, alligators, venus fly traps etc. It’s so disturbing.
Okay – the clip has convinced me… I’ll give it a go 🙂
On Twin Peaks – I keep looking for it but so far have only ever managed to find it in Region 1 😦 I watched it as a kid and was very freaked out by, but also fascinated by the show. Mostly I’ve forgotten what’s happened, which is why I’m trying to find it now!
