I’m not sure how I missed the release of this set, so forgive me if the news is a little stale. Wizards of the Coast have released a new set, Shards of Alara, a new set that starts off a new block in the 10th edition cycle. The set heralds the return of Planeswalker cards as well as the introduction of a new card rarity: mythic rare. New keyword mechanics include exalted (if the creature attacks alone, it gets +1/+1), devour (sacrifice creatures as the devourer comes into play to stack +1/+1 tokens), and unearth (put target card from graveyard into play with haste, and then remove it from the game at the end of turn).

According to the information page, Shards of Alara is five worlds, each world missing two colors of mana, which might make for interesting gameplay.

Each shard of Alara is missing two colors of mana, and thousands of years of evolution have led to five divergent societies that are completely unaware of each other’s existence. Bant is a land of knights and castles, ruled by angels. Esper is a world where everything is measured and controlled, and artifice touches everything alive. Grixis is a hellscape of death and decay, where everything is either undead or dying. Jund is a primordial world where dragons sit at the top of a vicious food chain. Naya is a lush jungle world where Behemoths are worshipped as gods.

I can see the Invincible Hymn card causing a lot of consternation…

Pirates vs Ninjas

Wizards of the Coast announced a new Pirates vs Ninjas Magic the Gathering theme deck.

Get ready to settle the ultimate rivalry, Magic style, with Duel Decks: Pirates vs. Ninjas!

With such awesome power in your hands, who will you choose? Will it be those elusive masters of fear and subterfuge? Across the entire known Multiverse, only one ninja has risen to legendary status.
